Security and Patents

Orion Systems is a leading provider of electronic signature and other biometric software solutions. We have developed a deep understanding of the requirements for legal enforceability of electronic signatures and contracts, as well as a thorough knowledge of the transaction, business and other processes that direct it. Through continuing research, Orion has become an expert authority on using and securing electronic records of all types – legally binding contracts, leases, loans  and personal information documents. For a comprehensive description of our security, please download our Orion Security White Paper.

Orion maintains a diverse portfolio of intellectual property (IP), including copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and patents. Like other  technology providers, Orion routinely applies to governments around the world to obtain patents on our inventions. A patent establishes ownership of an invention, enabling the patent owner to benefit commercially from investments in innovation. A patent is granted if government patent examiners conclude that an invention is a true innovation compared with existing technology. Orion has been awarded United States patents, and our worldwide portfolio continues to grow.  Orion’s software, electronically signing documents in Industry for more than 20 years, filed its first patent in 1996 based upon novel security methods we innovated at that time. Now, commonplace, Orion was the first to realize the strength in public key when joined with biometrics (such as an individual’s signature) and transactional data. Our initial patent, #6,745,936 (and follow on patent #7,246,097), Method and Apparatus for Generating Secure Endorsed Transactions, is the cornerstone for highly secure, legally enforceable electronic contracts.

Orion will defend itself vigorously in cases of patent infringement to the fullest extent of the law. Orion is represented by the venerable Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, LLP of Washington DC. For a comprehensive description of our patents, please download our Orion Patent White Paper.

Parties interested in licensing Orion’s IP are encouraged to contact our Intellectual Property and Licensing Group by submitting a licensing request . To promote broader availability and use of our technologies, Orion  may periodically publish new licensing programs on www.orisys.com .
